Doctor Strange: Scott Derrickson

I am so tired of watching the same Marvel movies over and over and over again with a fresh coat of paint. Yes, Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange had some interesting visuals and a surprisingly effective lead performance by Benedict Cumberbatch. But it hit all the same story beats as all the other Marvel origin movies. Doctor Strange was basically Tony Stark/Peter Quill--a snarky, low-key misogynist who quips and mugs his way through tense situations. You could practically see where the studio mandated humor and action set-pieces were crammed in. To be fair, I might be being a bit harsh. After all, before I saw the film I shot-gunned Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon (1950) and Throne of Blood (1957). Seeing Doctor Strange after that was sort of like attending an elementary school recorder recital after seeing The Marriage of Figaro. The wee ones mean well, but, you know...
