Former Disney princess Selena Gomez continues to tease her upcoming artistic reinvention. Set for an October 9 release, the artist's second solo album Revival has given fans the R&B-leaning "Good For You" and the Charli XCX-sounding, slightly disappointing "Same Old Love", both which have found unexpected success of the charts. For the third and last promotional single, the artist shares "Me & The Rhythm", a disco-tinged effort that surpasses its predecessors in innovation and uniqueness.
"Me & The Rhythm", another track written alongside Justin Tranter of Semi Precious Weapons, unsurprisingly features a predominant glam appeal, complete with cool guitar riffs and a smooth hook that transforms the track into the album's first uptempo dance jam. Instead of dwelling on a previously unsatisfying relationship or just how well a man could please her in between the sheets, Gomez sings about needing nothing but the music coming through the speakers.
As other music outlets have described it, and it's a spot-on description, Gomez's new promo single sounds perfect for a girl's Friday night out at the local roller rink, with the lights dimmed low and the glitter flowing nonstop. Music video possibility? Gomez sounds comfortable and more mature over the track's pulsating production. "And everybody wants to be touched, everybody wants to get some, but don't you play a song about love, when I move my body," she seductively warns.
Of the three Revival tracks released thus far, "Me & My Rhythm" seems to come out on top. The overly sexualized nature of Gomez' performance on "Good For You" sounded a tad forced and the angsty, rock-leaning appeal of "Same Old Love" seemed best coming from other artists, but the disco influences of the new offering effortlessly blend the artist's previous releases with the direction she's currently taking her future projects.
Gomez has definitely impressed critics as the years have gone by. Her time with The Scene received mixed reviews, "Come & Get It" and "The Heart Wants What It Wants" were pop hits, but Revival appears to be expanding the young artist's reach and toying with genre experimentation. "Me & The Rhythm" is a fresh throwback to an under-appreciated era but with enough Top 40 trends to make it a future radio staple. Gomez is evolving into the pop princess we knew she could be.
