I had a conversation recently about style icons.
While Patti Smith is more then just a style icon to me. I have always loved her style from the 70s. She's one of the amazing women that inspire my own look. I feel this sort of subculture communication is really lost with this generation.
The internet has meant that we don't have alternative styles of dress now. We are so connected and have access to so much that we don't have to attract people with the way we dress. It's sad because I think my generation was the last to really go for it. I dressed as a goth to attract other goths. At least that way I knew what I was getting and could make a potential friend. Now, its all about appearing to have no pores on instagram. It makes me feel sad.
Alternatively, being alternative means you can now go to high street stores and buy a slice of being a goth or a punk. Its depressing.
I think one of the reasons I like women like Patti Smith is lack of try hard. I genuinely think she just dresses this way because it makes her happy. I like that. I also like women who are effortless punk and look amazing.
I don't know if I would describe her as punk. I think an awful lot of clothing styles that are alternative, get pushed into being described as punk. Its a bit depressing. I like that she is her own person. But I still cannot find the words to describe it. I see elements of grunge in her clothing pre 1993 so there you go.
